Google introduces Google Chrome OS
In a surprise move, Google announced its Chrome OS, an open source light weight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks. This move clearly aims to compete with Microsoft that powers most small low-cost laptops.
Earlier this week, Microsoft also disclosed a project codenamed Gazelle, which is a browser OS with more security built-in to act actually as robust as an OS.
But, it looks like Google has a head start with this announcement by promising its new OS will deliver speed, simplicity, security and takes you from zero to “heaven” in just about few seconds. As the name indicates, we should expect a minimal user interface since all user experiences will happen on the Web.
According to Google, this project complements Android, which was designed from the beginning to work across a variety of devices from phones to set-top boxes to netbooks while Chrome OS is being created for people who spend most of their time on the web, and is being designed to power computers ranging from small netbooks to full-size desktop systems. Netbook is where the 2 projects overlap, but Google believes choice will drive innovation for the benefit of everyone, including Google.
Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010 and later 2009 Google will open-source its code.
