More evidence that Nokia will adopt Android for Smartphone battle
The N97 is perhaps the last smartphone from Nokia that runs Symbian OS. Nokia, the world number one mobile manufacturer, sees its market share continues to erode at rapid pace, especially in high-end smartphone arena. The smartphone segment is critical as it is the only part of the mobile phone market which is growing. Cash-strapped consumers are either holding on to their existing phones and opting for cheaper SIM-only deals or "trading up" to more advanced gadgets such as the iPhone.
According to a report from the Guardian, Nokia is reportedly developing a mobile phone that runs on Google’s Android platform and the new device will be shown off at the Nokia World conference in September.
Opting to use Android, an "open source" platform that any software developer can access, is a reversal of the company’s previous strategy in mobile phone software, but Nokia understands the adoption of developer community plays a big role in the success of any mobile platform.
Previously Nokia purchased out right the partners in the Symbian mobile software joint venture and subsequently made it free in an attempt to response to Google Android, but that effort did not gain any momentum.
