image Our friends at PocketNow, while fiddling around with all the diagnostic, testing programs that Samsung recklessly left behind, they found an utility that uses the built-in digital compass on the Samsung Omnia II. The device is powered by Microsoft Windows Mobile, reportedly will be carried by Verizon wireless shortly.

As you know the digital compass is an hardware features that Apple implemented in the its latest iPhone 3G S. With the OS API, app developers could actually use to provide “Augmented Reality” or AR feature in their new application.

You can see this advanced capability used in the latest Yelp app and the Paris Metro app available on the iPhone 3G S.

Windows Mobile fans don’t jump for Joyce yet. The OS has to provide the API in order to exploit the feature fully. Microsoft hasn’t shared any news about this feature, whether it will be incorporate to an interim WM 6.x or we have to wait until WM 7. To be seen!
