The Problem with Owning too Many Gadgets

image I’m not exactly a gadget freak, but I am addicted to the ones that I do own. And this is why you’re not likely to see me without my smartphone and notebook computer in tow. But I do have a friend who loves gadgets, and I love shopping for him. It’s a challenge every year to get him a gizmo that he does not already own – I have managed to stay ahead of him for the past two years with a portable DVD player and a digital photo frame. But the job is becoming increasingly difficult, simply because I try to find gadgets that are both useful and unique.

Now, you might ask why I don’t buy the same thingies for myself; to be honest, I do feel the urge to do so, but then, my practical side takes over and my bank balance breathes a sigh of relief that it is not being taxed too much. The thing is, I don’t purchase too many gadgets for myself because there’s a problem with owning too many gadgets:

  • They cost good money, so if you’re buying them without the necessity, you’re wasting hard-earned cash.
  • They also make you spend more money for accessories, whether needed or not. So if you have a mobile, you’re tempted to buy a Bluetooth headset.
  • They take up too much space – I have two mobile phones, two additional batteries for each of them, chargers for the phones, a charger for the batteries, one laptop, one extra battery for the laptop, the heavy laptop charger, an iPod, the charger, a Sony MP3 player, and so on and so forth.
  • They clutter up your home with too many wires.
  • You don’t use all of them, some of them very rarely and some, never at all.
  • You’re not doing anything to help the environment because the more gadgets you own, the larger the electronic trash dump gets. You also tend to dispose of them irresponsibly, especially batteries that leak poisonous elements into the ground and pollute precious resources like water.
  • They become obsolete very fast – no sooner do you get used to one kind of mobile phone than a hundred newer designs are launched and marketed through an advertising blitz that tempts you to go in for a change in models.

In spite of all these potential issues, my friend is as happy as a lark with all his electronic paraphernalia. And since I love to shop for gadgets, we share the experience, whether it involves him purchasing stuff or me getting him a present. It’s a fun thing to do when you’re addicted to them!
