HD Radio on iPhone? “There’s an app for that”

image The latest ZuneHD does feature something that Apple iPhone doesn’t, the HD Radio, but now there’s an app for that.
iBiquity Digital, the company behind HD Radio technology, is releasing a free new app to get the HD radio on the iPhone.

When we said free, actually it is not entirely true, since the HD radio needs a hardware feature (that might already exist but has not yet been enabled). The solution requires an outboard Gigaware HD Radio receiver accessory, which costs $80 at the Shack near you.  The receiver looks and acts like a small portable analogue AM/FM when it is not connected to the iPhone.

The whole solution is a little bit cumbersome to our taste but it promises to deliver very good AM/FM radio over the air where your less than optimum AT&T network does not cover. Sports fans might also like what the app has to offer, since HD Radio allows users to tap into some team-specific channels through both AM and FM.

The company will release a receiver that connects directly to the bottom of iPhone around holiday.
