RSS Player Podcatcher 2.0 for iPhone Released
I love listening Podcast on my mobile device, but with Apple iPhone, I think the Podcast experience is far less exciting than I expected especially when I am on the go without access to the iTunes or without WiFi. When Apple allows to download the podcast, It is so confusing switching between iPod & iTunes apps to look up for the podcast for downloading.
I looked for a third party app and it also comes to my surprise there’re not many out there. I learned Apple might have restricted this feature in the past.
The podcatcher app I found in the app store was RSS Player V1, which is reviewed here. The V1 had a short live on the Apple App store. Luckily the V2.0 is back to the app store to our delights. Features are carried over such download via WiFi or 3G, no need iTunes to subscribe to Podcast feeds. The new V2.0 ($.99) app brings many desirable enhancements:
Several ways to subscribe to podcasts.
- Search by Title
- Providers
- Most Popular
- Top Rated
- Recently Added
- Suggested
- Import by Url
When searching for podcasts, tap the title that interests you. Then simply tap "Subscribe",
which is located in the top right corner, your podcast is added to the favorites and starts to download immediately. Subscribing to a podcast has never been easier. Already subscribed to podcasts via ITunes? No problem, just enter your opml url and have your podcasts imported into RSSPlayer. The app features a player, which is similar to iPod app with a nice addition of few second jumping, should that commercial bothers you.
RSSPlayer V2.0 has push notification. No more waiting for that new podcast, with a gentle tone, you are alerted as the podcast is posted. Users are limited to 5 push notifications. There is an in app purchase option to purchase more push alerts for an additional $0.99 per 10 downloads. Great for those with large collection.

I’ve used both version 1 and 2 of RSS Player and, without a doubt, version 2 is a huge step up for the app. I’ve used it all day without issue and with much enjoyment and look forward to having podcasts available on demand on my iPhone, plus having one less reason to plug my phone into something.
