Goodbye Google Phone Store!
Google’s revolutionary project to sell the phone directly to users has been canned according to a blog post. As it started, Google tried to provide the customer with different experience when shopping for the new phone. The online store carried the Nexus One, a Google branded phone made by HTC, only T-Mobile was the carrier for this phone. It was expected to add Verizon and Sprint, but both carriers cancelled the plan.
Initially the Nexus One was the only one that carried Android OS 2.1. The latest OS made a huge differentiator. Unfortunately, since then many other Android phones got upgraded to the same version. Furthermore, newer phones such the HTC Incredible and the HTC EVO 4G just made the Nexus One obsolete.
Google explains:
“While the global adoption of the Android platform has exceeded our expectations, the web store has not. It’s remained a niche channel for early adopters, but it’s clear that many customers like a hands-on experience before buying a phone, and they also want a wide range of service plans to chose from”.
http://google.com/phone has become just a showroom for available Android based phones.
