image BumpTop, the maker of 3D desktop User Interface just got acquired by Google. BumpTop aims to change the “same old crap” found in the layout of both the Windows and Mac operating systems. By turning the desktop into a three-dimensional space as seen in the video below.

The search company did not share further information about what it is going to do with BumpTop, but one would think immediately that the 3D interface would go on the Android or the Chrome OS tablets. The tootle seems to be used with the traditional mouse or pen. The developer might need to adapt to multi-touch capability before it is usable on modern devices.

Since Apple has raised the bar so high with its iPad UI. All competitors naturally are canceling their current projects (HP Slate, Microsoft Courier) or looking the way to outsmart Apple with new tools. We will see if they succeed.

I thought the 3D desktop was somewhat silly. Sure it looks cool for a little bit, but ultimately, it’s just more distracting. The video did a good job selling me on the idea of using a 3D desktop. It actually looks pretty useful now.
