f2fThe cross platform (Blackberry, iOS, J2ME, Android) app face2face uses the general proximity aware to discover your nearby social networking friends from Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and MySpce… and helps to connect with them. The “Friends of Friends” feature also allows to expand your friend circle.

The app offers a variety of capability including display stream of status update, SMS, Instant Messaging, etc…

The developer is designed with privacy protection in mind, while using the proximity capability,  it never give the exact location.

From f2f blog:

“Face2Face is a proximity based app that is funneled through your existing social network and notifies you when a friend or FOF is close by, allowing you to call, text, or IM them right away without the stalking overlay of pinpoint mapping. As nice as it is to know your friend is at the mall at the same time as you, she doesn’t need to know that you’re in line for your third latte of the day. Face2Face preserves your privacy by eschewing maps and focusing on the idea that overlaying our reality with a virtual world that contains our points of interest allows us to interact with our friends in a more fun and meaningful way. Integrating the things you like into the locations you frequent will create an interactive relationship with stores and venues that can result in deals, without leaving a virtual trail of bread crumbs that any one can use to pinpoint where you are. “

The app interface is very well thought out across various device types. The shortfall of this type of app is all the parties seem to have the app running in the background to get its benefit. So the usefulness depends on its popularity.
