Today at a “Mobile Event”, Facebook unveiled an enhancement of its location-based service called “Places”. The enhancement allows merchant push promotion to checking-in members.

imageWhen Facebook member launches Places from the Facebook mobile app, a listing of nearby businesses along with special icons indicating available deals, user can select and claim it at the business venue.

Facebook will launch this service initially with 20,000 Local businesses and promises to open up for everybody at later date. Business then can take advantage of this  free offer from Facebook. On a business’ Places page, they can set up an offer. There are four kinds:

  • Individual deals, which reward a customer if they check-in once.
  • Loyalty deals, which reward customers for a certain number of purchases or check-ins.
  • Friend deals, which reward customers if they bring in extra friends.
  • Charity deals, which allow businesses to donate to charity for every check-in they attract.

The other notable enhancement is the addition of Groups on the mobile app. Facebook group is a feature that allows user to have small group of close friends to exchange updates, docs and media contents privately. The mobile Groups let user write post, share photo and browse updates from members of the group. You can not use location check-in within. If you do need to check-in to places but only share the location with your group then Mappr is a good alternative.
