Facebook Places Debuts in Europe and Canada
Followed to an earlier launch from the US, today, Facebook introduced Facebook Places in five European countries including UK, Germany, Italy, France and Spain and one North American country: Canada.
Facebook Places is a location-based service aiming to provide deals, promotions when smartphone users check-in to shops.
In a post, TheNextWeb details the four types of check-ins:
- Charity Deals – to help give back to a good cause.
- Individual Deals – retailers can give away items.
- Loyalty Deals – users can build up loyalty points.
- Friend Deals – get rewarded for bringing friends to a location.
To boost the launch, Facebook partners with prominent businesses such Starbucks, Yo Sushi, Mazda, Argos, Debenhams, Alton Towers and Benetton. etc.. to provide free of discount deals.
Facebook Places service competes with popular location-based Gowalla, Foursquare using the built-in GPS in Smartphone for localized advertisement.
