image When Steve Jobs mentioned the “Post-PC” era has begun, he probably meant “Post-Microsoft” era. After longtime being Microsoft partner, HP is launching products that have  the company WebOS in both smartphone and tablet and today, Asus, the Taiwanese PC maker, plans to release netbooks powered by Google’s Android and Intel’s Meego OS, according to Asus CEO.

As Microsoft has not yet released an OS optimized for modern tablets. Manufacturers started looking in to alternative ways such Meego and Android, but this is the first time a major PC manufacturer considers non Microsoft OS for its netbook line.

Asus was the first manufacturer that ignited the netbook market two years ago with affordable hardware powered by Linux but later Microsoft captured the netbook market with its Windows XP.  The netbook market did not last after the arrival of more powerful smartphones and tablets.

During an interview, Asus CEO Jerry Shen today unveiled that his company will use Meego and Android for the new Atom CPU based netbooks as well as tablets. Meego is a Linux-based OS that was originally designed by Intel and Nokia but later went back to Intel after Nokia picked Microsoft Windows Phone 7 for its smartphone and shelved the tablet plan for the time being.

Asus determines to capture 5% to 8% of the tablet market by the end of the year. The company tablets will be using Google Android OS.
