Microsoft is Previewing Windows 8 with Touch Interface (Video)
Today at the D9 conference, Microsoft unveiled the user interface of its next version of Windows codenamed Windows 8.
As you can predict, the new UI is touch compatible as well legacy navigation (mouse and keyboard) compatible, therefore one platform should run across tablet and desktop/ laptop.
The obvious change is the transformation to the Metro UI style tiles seen in Windows Phone OS, where each tile represents an W8 app. Tiles are larger in size than icons, so they can show dynamic contents. W8 Apps are built using HTML5 and JavaScript, they can slide from partial to full screen. Windows 8 can also launch legacy Windows apps as well as file explorer capability.
Here are a few aspects of the new interface we showed today:
- Fast launching of apps from a tile-based Start screen, which replaces the Windows Start menu with a customizable, scalable full-screen view of apps.
- Live tiles with notifications, showing always up-to-date information from your apps.
- Fluid, natural switching between running apps.
- Convenient ability to snap and resize an app to the side of the screen, so you can really multitask using the capabilities of Windows.
- Web-connected and Web-powered apps built using HTML5 and JavaScript that have access to the full power of the PC.
- Fully touch-optimized browsing, with all the power of hardware-accelerated Internet Explorer 10.
The design seems to contrast with Apple from the unification both traditional PC and tablet in to one OS.
Microsoft mentioned earlier that Windows 8 will support both ARM and Intel processors.
