imageSony is officially launching S (formerly codenamed S1), a tablet optimized for rich media entertainment. The first new Android based is available for preorder today for next month delivery.

The price for the 16GB model is $500, same as the Apple iPad. The 9.4” tablet weights 1.5 lbs but ergonomically designed to make it feel lighter "its center of gravity shifts the device’s weight closer to the palm of your hand, making it feel lighter and more comfortable while reading a book, or watching a video." according to Sony.

While it is hard to differentiate one tablet from another, Sony earned kudos for a tear-drop shape distinctive design. The screen has 1280×800 resolution, the tablet is powered by  Tegra 2 CPU and Android Honeycomb. Sony adds few additional features such as a full-size SD card, universal remote control and it is the first PlayStation-certified tablet, allowing you to download and play certain "classic PSone and PSP game titles."
