image Hurricane Sandy gave a valuable wake-up call about vital things we take for granted such power, clean water, food, shelter, phone, etc… Millions of residents of New York are still living without power for an extended period.

Few creative solutions have been spotted around the city, one of them is the BioLite CampStove, a wood-burning device that converts the heat from its fire into electricity – perfect for camping, preparedness, and emergency settings.

The solution consists of 2 parts: The orange module houses a thermoelectric element, a battery, a fan, and a microprocessor that tweaks power distribution as needed to charge the battery or connected device via an USB port and the hot chamber for you to burn wood, leaves, etc..   With the device, user can cook a steak, boil water and charge the phone at the same time.

The device costs $129 on BioLite’s site.
