Facebook just added a new offering to increase the company revenue stream. The social network giant will let users purchase and have physical Facebook Gift card mailed to their friends. The recipient will receive a push notification and will get prompted to provide the mailing address to receive the card.
Each physical gift card card could cover more than one store. The sender can optionally buy separate gift amount per store. Initially the service offers four merchants: Jamba Juice, Olive Garden, Sephora, and Target. The card balances can be managed through the Facebook mobile app and available for refill by friends or self.
"I think [Gifts] can be great revenue opportunities longer term, but for right now it’s about building out great experiences around these," Said, Mark Zuckerberg Facebook CEO, on the company’s earnings call.
It is still a backward move from an avant-garde company such Facebook, while other services including Apple Passbook encourage people to get rid of plastic card for mobile payment. Facebook Cards will become available to users "in the coming days," the company said.
