image According to Bloomberg, Apple has just acquired WiFiSLAM, a start-up company based in Palo-Alto, California. WiFiSLAM is specialized in location-based technology that lets smartphone pinpoint its location and friend’s location in real-time to 2.5m accuracy using only ambient WiFi signals that are already present in buildings. It can work as indoor GPS  such shopping mall to product-level retail customer engagement, to proximity-based social networking, etc…

Apple has confirmed the acquisition stating “Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time”. Last year Apple acquired AuthenTec that provides fingerprint for authentication and a handful of other small companies that we have not yet seen the fruition.

The acquisition of indoor mapping technology suggests that Apple will beef up its mapping offerings for the upcoming mobile OS.   WiFiSLAM’s co-founders include former Google software engineering intern Joseph Huang, who presented at the GeoMeetup (August 23rd 2012) about Indoor location.
