PayPal is rolling out to the merchants that support its payment system, a small USB thumb-drive-size hardware device called beacon. The device uses Low Energy Bluetooth to connect with customers for no-friction check-ins and payments.
Walk-in customers with PayPal mobile app [only available on iOS and Android] will receive a vibration or sound announcing the connectivity established. The merchant can deliver product offers, see the customer ID photo and let the customer check out with only a verbal confirmation followed by email notification.
Using Low Energy Bluetooth would help to reduce energy consumption on user mobile device when compared to competing geo-location geo-fencing using GPS.
Devices supporting LEB include: HTC One, One X+, Droid DNA, Apple’s iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPad (3rd gen & 4th gen), iPad Mini, Samsung Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy SIII, Galaxy S4, Note II.
The latest Nokia, Blackberry smartphone and Microsoft Surface tablets also support LEB but there is no PayPal app available for the platforms.
