Google’s Advanced Technology and Projects (ATAP) group went back to the mother ship Google after the sale of Motorola Mobility to Lenovo. Today, more details have been revealed about one of the projects coming out of ATAP, called Ara, which lays out the modular architecture allowing smartphone users to swap components to their likings at will. The device using this architecture, could start as low as $50.

The project is still in its infancy, but the group hopes the first smartphone labeled as “Grayphone” could hit the market in 2015.
