Asus ignited the subcompact laptop war with its Eee PC, a low end hardware and OS such Linux and Windows XP to keep the cost down. Major manufacturers HP, Dell, Acer are about jumping in the ring to catch pre-summer shopping season. This class of device in general targets Web browsing usage with light computing power.

Sharp is taking a slightly different approach, with help from Microsoft and Intel, Sharp  announced  the Willcom D4 “communication device” using the new Intel’s Atom processor and Microsoft’s Vista Home Premium operating system.

The device uses a 1.33GHz Z520 Intel Atom processor (design based on a single-chip with integrated graphics called the Intel System Controller Hub). The 1 pounder device sports a 5 ” LCD at 1024×600 resolution with LED backlight, a 1.8-inch 40GB hard disk drive (Ultra ATA/100), 64-key QWERTY keyboard, a built-in camera, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a mirco SD card slot, and a USB 2.0 slot. Considering the specs, this small wonder can easily tackle more serious type of workload to be the laptop replacement (if you still have good eyesight).

The small package does not come cheap. The price converted from Japanese Yen mounted to a hefty $1275 price tag.
