Nokia To Become More Internet Company
Granted Nokia has the majority of the worldwide handset market, but with the pressure of Asian manufacturers; the growing online services from Google, Microsoft, Google as well as competition from Apple iPhone, Google Android, Blackberry and MS Windows Mobile, Nokia feels the need to change its business model.
During Nokia’s annual shareholder meeting yesterday, CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo stated “Our goal is to act less like a traditional manufacturer, and more like an internet company,” Kallasvuo told his shareholders. “Companies such as Apple, Google, and Microsoft are not our traditional competitors, but they are major forces that must be reckoned with. Make no mistake: We are taking on these challenges seriously and aggressively.”
We should expect Nokia will diversify its business more toward Web services as it already started with the Music service called “Come with Music” and the pending acquisition of the Mapping company Navteq. At the same time we don’t want Nokia to lose its focus on the handset core business.
